This is a type 2, 1936 Chained SS Dagger nicely preserved in the veteran’s family since the war. It doesn’t get much better than this in terms of quality and condition. We rate this dagger as mint considering the amazing condition when compared to 99% of the type 2 chained SS daggers out there.

The grip is solid, without any cracks and no noteworthy dings or scratches. The eagle is beautiful, retaining 100% of it’s original detail. SS roundel is also 100%. Both guards are the solid nickel type and show very little (if any) wear, aside from a slight age patina as expected. The guard to grip fit is nice and tight. The pommel nut is also in pristine condition, showing no impact dings, and no signs of having ever been removed.

The scabbard is the painted type, with 99% of its original paint, and only modest hairline scratches and one very small chip (about 1/8″ squared). The fittings have a nice age patina that match the grip guards, and are without noteworthy flaws, except for a couple small dings (hardly worth noting), and a minor impact ding to the tip ball (see photos). The center band shows the standard type 2 dark pebbled burnishing, as do the chain links. There are six links in all; three with the SS deaths head, and three with SS runes. Three of the seven link connectors are unsoldered — why is anyone’s guess. All links and link connectors have the same patina and tone. On the reverse of the first “SS” link on the side with only two links is the SS proof stamp (two intertwined sig runes). The Woton knot shows no DRGM mark (as is expected with a type 2 SS chained dagger), and the two connector rings are tapered as they enter the knot. The knot shows standard use wear, and a nice age patina matching the rest of the metal fittings. All scabbard screws are secure and show no evidence of removal.

The blade is in exceptional condition when compared with other examples I’ve seen. Aside from the normal runner marks along the length of the blade, there is only modest surface level spotting, which could possibly be removed by a skilled professional. The motto has a crisp cut, with a light gray tone, with no makers mark on the reverse (as expected).

This is indeed one of the nicest chained SS daggers I’ve come across to date. You don’t find many of these that haven’t either been worked on, modified, pieced together, or otherwise. This is an honest SS chained dagger that would be difficult to upgrade!
