For starters, the vertical leather strap has been repaired in a couple of places, and the retainer strap replaced. We believe the repairs to the vertical strap, and the replacement of the retainer strap were all done wartime based on the level of wear and method used to repair the breaks (stitching).
If we look at the grip plates we can also see some issues. The plates were removed and replaced at one time, and with replacement grommets. While both plates are securely attached now, there is no evidence that can prove they were replaced wartime and not postwar, which is why we mention it. The other issue with the grip plates is with the HJ diamond emblem. It is a bit small for the opening in the plate. It is entirely possible that whatever caused the grip plates to result in their being removed from the knife originally, the original diamond was also damaged and replaced with this one. Or, perhaps the grip plate was damaged and replaced with a new one that had a slightly larger opening than the original diamond. It’s really anyone’s guess.
With all of its issues, this is still a very nice Hitler Youth knife for the budget or beginner collector.
