The black grip plates show very little use wear and no cracks. The Hitler Youth diamond emblem at the center of one of the plates shows 100% of its enamel, with no loss to note. Running a finger over the diamond provides the slight movement that we know to look for with these, and is expected.
The nickel plating has worn away in some areas, mainly where the scabbard snap strap button has rubbed the surface on the front side of the knife. Overall the knife still retains over 90% of its plating.
The blade is in remarkable condition, with none of the nicks we typically see along the edge of the blade, and very little wear at all save for some scabbard rash and minor scratches. There is no motto present on these blades as many late-war produced versions did not include them.
The original period applied black scabbard paint is 99%, with only a few very minor nicks to note. The leather straps do show normal use wear, so we know this knife was used, but there are no compromising areas where leather cracking has occurred; the leather is strong, flexible and well preserved. The retainer snap still works and is just as strong as the day of issue.
Considering these were essentially boy scout knives, thrown at trees, used to dig in the dirt and basically abused, finding one in this condition is quite rare and very refreshing.
