The guard on this one is a real beauty, with the seldom seen 4th (and final) guard design from Holler. Modest use wear can be seen on the outermost areas of the eagle, including its feet, wing shoulders, swastika and parts of the wreath, but overall the detail is still a solid 95%. The guard’s reverse is smooth and without pitting. The pommel cap shows the same consistent use wear, yet very prominent detail to the oak leaf pattern, and only a few very minor dings. The grip has a nice light orange tone (more orange than the photos show), with minimum usage wear (no cracks or chips) and nice detail. The fit of the grip between the pommel cap and guard is nice and tight.
The unmarked blade on this one is a real gem! Typically with these heer daggers we see a good deal of surface oxidation and/or rust spotting, but not here. Aside from a few slightly dull toned age spots (hardly worth noting), we can only note the typical scabbard rash from repeated scabbard removal. Otherwise both sides of this beauty show a nice, bright, reflective surface with a strong cross grain.
The standard scabbard shows some oxidation along the narrow sides, which is very typical with these. The scabbard’s nice, deep tone with a hint of straw coloring, along with the clean, silver tone of the grip fittings, and finished with the original portepee make for a very elegant looking dagger when displayed in it’s full glory!
