1870 Iron Cross First Class
Here’s a rare one, a vaulted 1870 Iron Cross first class with a couple of very nice, unique features that set it apart from the standard versions (possibly a private purchase example), including a brass or even copper core and a custom pin style. On the front we see some flaking to the black paint, which reveals an underlying copper/darkened brass tone.

The paint overall is still about 80%, with most of the wear being to the raised areas of the Swastika, crown and 1870 date, as well as a single large area between the “W” and 1870. The ribbed outer trim shows some minor impact dings and normal wear, but is overall in surprisingly good condition considering the age of this piece. The photos speak more loudly than our words in this regard.
Moving to the back we see a very nice age color with some minor scratches, which is perfectly normal. The more noteworthy element on the reverse of this 1870 Iron Cross is the pin style. Typically we see these with a flat reverse hour glass style pin that extends slightly beyond the bottom of the cross, but with this version we see a round pin whose point terminates almost precisely at the bottom edge of the lower cross arm.
We’ve priced this 1870 cross to sell, so if you’re looking for that one unique version that set’s itself apart from the rest, this is the one!
