Perhaps the most obvious unique quality about this dagger is the use of SA guards. While not often encountered, many collectors have embraced the idea of surplus SA guards being applied to SS daggers in an effort to utilize the materials already sitting around in the factories. The guards on this example show a patina that matches with the grip eagle, as well as verdigris that indicates they’ve been with this dagger for decades. The fit of the grip to the guards is remarkably fluid when viewed from the front and back sides, but not perfectly flush when viewed from the side. Having noted all of this, we cannot escape the fact that it is possible these guards were replaced post WW2 so we’ve priced the dagger accordingly.
Aside from the use of SA guards, the grip is is fantastic condition, with all fittings and insignia showing the expected verdigris and consistent patina we like to see. The pommel nut is a shinier tone, and less aged than the other fittings, but we’ve seen this before on untouched daggers.
The blade shows some peppering of oxidation, but nothing too distracting. A nice crisp motto and lack of a maker mark on the reverse, which is normal with these daggers.
The scabbard body is anodized (which is correct) and the chain and band are the type I plated variation. The “DRGM” marking is partially visible through the cloverleaf as shown in one of the photos. The spring clip is missing from the clasp.
Overall, while not perfect, this is an exceptional dagger for the collector on a budget who has been waiting for an affordable chained SS dagger to display in their collection. Don’t procrastinate, this dagger will not last long at this price!
