These are really unique and gorgeous pieces in their own right. All brass fittings, thick (and tough) leather scabbard, beautifully triple-etched hunting motif blade — what’s not to love about these German hunting knives?
The heavy stag grip is adorned with three brass acorns along the length of the front, and skillfully fit with a brass ferrule ring and pommel cap, complete with upside-down acorn “nut” atop the cap. Two brass deer hooves make up the cross guard with the solid brass clamshell directly below. The clamshell design is of a deer sitting in the woods.
The triple-etched blade is in near perfect condition, with only very minor surface spotting. The etching is superb, and as clear today as it was 100 years ago. The etching along the thick edge of the blade (not shown in the photos) is of a leafy vine pattern, and is just as prominent as the blade’s surface etching.
The leather and brass scabbard shows obvious signs of age, but no separation of the seam along the length of the reverse, and no cracks or weak spots. It’s very solid! There is no flaking when running your fingers along the surface. The skinner on this one is long gone (reflected in the price), but the pouch is there if a replacement is found.
