Early SS Dagger — Robert Klaas

This Robert Klaas SS Dagger may not be in the best of shape, but it still has character, and appears to be uncleaned. This Robert Klaas SS Dagger may not be in the best of shape, but it still has character, and appears to be uncleaned.

The grip has a couple of small chips, the largest being on the side with the nickel eagle, to the right of the SS roundel. It seems like 1 in every 3 SS daggers that make it into my inbox has a chip in the grip so this is becoming more common. There is another, much smaller and shallower chip on the reverse where the grip and upper guard meet. There also appears to be an attempt at gluing a small area to the right of the smaller chip, perhaps to keep it from spreading. What remains is a very nice ebony grip with an average number of shallow nicks and scratches. The nickel grip eagle shows a surprising amount of detail considering the condition of the rest of this piece, with breast feather detail, and head detail still very much in tact. A very nice eagle!

The upper and lower guards are of the solid nickel type, with modest patina and a few minor dings, nothing unusual. The lower guard, on the reverse, shows the district mark of “I”.

The blade on this example is less than desirable, with a good deal of spotting and about a one quarter inch section of the tip missing. The etched motto and Robert Klaas Solingen maker mark are still nice and crisp with the perfect medium gray tone.

Last, but not least, the scabbard! The scabbard’s anodized surface shows some spotting over approximately 60% of the surface, but the shell is dent free. The metal fittings are matching nickel construction, with all screws appearing untouched. The lower fitting shows a couple of minor dings, and the ball has been mostly smashed, as so many of these are.

For someone looking for a dagger with a ton of restoration potential, and an affordable price tag, this may be the one you’ve been looking for!
