Here’s an early Robert Klaas SS Dagger straight out of the woodwork. She shows her age, but is a great dagger for someone looking to get into SS dagger collecting but doesn’t want to pay an arm and a leg.

The grip is in great shape, with only minor nicks and scratches and one minor small chip to the right of the roundel that practically disappears into the wood. The color is perfect, a deep chocolate black. The eagle has easily 95% of the original factory detail still remaining, and a patina tone that matches the guards and scabbard fittings perfectly. The pommel nut shows no signs of gnarling to suggest that the dagger has been unopened since the war.

The anodized scabbard is dent free, with only some very minor rust/oxidation spots. The solid nickel fittings are free of dents and a nice patina tone that matches the solid nickel fittings of the grip. This is very important when reviewing a dagger since it is one indication that the scabbard and dagger are a match. The tip fitting is a bit loose, likely from the impact that resulted in the smashed tip ball. As you can see in the photos this same impact also resulted in the seam of the tip ball splitting. The fit of the dagger to the scabbard is tight, and the scabbard does not completely seal against the lower grip guard, which (again) is likely the result of the impact that caused the tip ball to smash. We do see this from time to time when a dagger is dropped – the impact can be devastating to the scabbard’s tip fitting.

The blade is in fair condition when compared to many examples on the market. There is some minor oxidation spotting throughout. The motto on the front has a correct light inset tone for this maker that matches the maker’s mark (Robert Klaas Solingen) on the back.
