This is a nice, early SA dagger by maker Hugo Rader, Solingen, with solid nickel pommel nut, upper and lower guards, and scabbard fittings. This maker ranks #7 on the McSARR scale.
The grip on this one has a very smooth and rich mocha wood coloring! The grip eagle retains 100% of its original detail, and the SA roundel is 90% (with some minor enamel loss). The wood grip overall is in minty condition, except for a very small hairline crack north of the SA roundel. There is also a very minor ding on the reverse, near the upper guard, but no chips or scratches to note. The pommel nut does have some minor scratches, but not consistent with removal of the nut.
The scabbard is the anodized type, with normal oxidation on both sides, but it still shows a dark, rich tone! The scabbard fittings are solid nickel with minimal surface scratches (consistent with normal use) and a nice even patina that match the grip fittings. As is typical, the tip ball does have some impact damage, but is still very presentable.
This dagger’s blade isn’t in the nicest condition, but still has a strong crossgrain and plenty of appeal. It shows the normal runner marks, as would be expected. There is surface oxidation on both sides of the blade, covering approximately 40-50% of the surface area. The motto is a nice medium gray tone, consistent with the Hugo Rader maker’s mark on the reverse.
Overall a nice, hard to find dagger, and at a reasonable price.
