Here’s a real gem! A untouched, early F.W. Backhaus SA Dagger in exceptional condition overall. This one rates a 7 out of 10 on the McSARR scale.
The grip is solid, and virtually without flaw. Typically we see a good deal of scratches and dings on these, but not here! The grip eagle is gorgeous, with 99% of it’s fine detail in tact. Same with the SA roundel. Both solid nickel cross guards are equally as attractive, withstanding the test of time with absolute grace, showing the perfect level of patina. The lower guard shows the SA Gruppe stamp, “BO” (Bayerische Ostmark). The pommel nut shows none of the gnarling we sometimes see on these due to improper removal (using a wrench). Based on what we can see, this dagger appears to have never been apart.
The blade shows some very minor spotting, but over 95% of the blade is clean, shiny and shows a very nice cross grain! The motto, “Alles fűr Deutschland”, or translated, “Everything for Germany”, is very crisp and a nice medium-dark gray tone. Same with the Maker’s mark, “F.W. Backhaus Solingen”.
The scabbard is the anodized type, showing your typical surface crazing, but no dents or ding, and very few prominent scratches. The solid nickel metal fittings are just as nice as the guards, and match their patina perfectly. The only notable flaw is a very tiny ding on the surface of the tip fitting (see photos). This scabbard includes the original leather hanger strap, with leather that is supple and not dried – a nice deep dark leather tone. The metal clasp patina matches the other fittings perfectly, and the catch spring is nice and firm.
