A nice DLV Flyers Dagger (also referred to as a Glider Pilot Dagger or Knife) from the scarce maker, Josef Munch Brotterode.
Nicely aged overall, this DLV dagger would make a fantastic show piece! The deep blue leather wrapped grip shows some normal surface wear, but retains over 95% of it’s color. The silver plated nickel guard has about 80% of its plating still in tact, while the pommel cap has lost all but about 10%, and what remains is only in the recesses. The black enamel of the Swastika is 100% on both sides of the guard. Stamped into the end of one wing is the letter “K”. We tried to photograph this stamp, but it was stubborn. If it’s necessary to provide a photo to make the sale we’ll be happy to try again.
The blades on these typically have problems, so it’s always nice to find one in as good a condition as this example. We’ve made no attempt at cleaning the blade (not even wiping down with a cloth), so what you see it how we received it. There appears to be some dirt/grime on the blade, but also the typical oxidation spotting – although light and minimal. Some scabbard runner marks are also present. Overall this blade is solid, with a very pronounced crossgrain, original buffer pad, and well defined Josef Münch maker mark.
The deep blue leather wrapped scabbard shows wear matching the rest of the dagger. The leather shows some scratches, use wear, and a couple of nicks, but no cracks (the leather is not dry). The scabbard fittings on this DLV dagger have retained approximately 50% of the original silver plating. All screws are accounted for, and do not show signs of having ever been removed. The top of the scabbard throat shows the correct waffenamp stamp as expected.
