This is a nice, honest early SA dagger by maker Robert Herder, Solingen with the nice, hard to come by maroon windmill maker mark — almost a color match to the grip.
The grip on this one has a very nice, deep burgundy tone – a very elegant color! The grip eagle retains approximately 90% of its original detail, and the SA roundel is 100%. There is a very small hairline crack along the left quarter of the roundel. This is typically the area we see small cracks with these SAs. The fittings show only a few minor scratches, with the Gruppe mark “Wm” on the lower guard.
The scabbard is the anodized type, with much of the color having faded over the years, leaving behind a nice silver-gray tone. The tip fitting shows some dings (evident in the photos) but the ball has escaped the brunt of it and remains a nice oblong shape.
This dagger’s blade is in exceptional condition overall, with only the normal runner marks and a few surface oxidation spots here and there — mainly on the reverse. The motto at one time was a nice maroon color, but the even tone has been lost. The motto, however, retains almost 100% of the dark tone.
Overall a nice, hard to find dagger, and at a reasonable price.
