Here we have a salty Cholm shield (the large “M” version) with a nice SS-cloth wool backing and backing paper.
A little rust doesn’t dismiss the fact that this example has a ton of potential. One of the more rare version, the large “M” design doesn’t seem to come around very often. There were two designs of the Cholm 1942 campaign shields; referred to as the “small M” and the “large M” designs. This refers to the length of the “V” portion of the letter “M”, where the large version is roughly flush with the other legs of the letter “M”.
The front of the shield has great detail with no notable wear, aside from the rust spotting you see. The rust is limited mainly to the outer rim of the shield, with a couple of small spots on the surface as shown. This example does have the die-flaw hallmark in the Swastika, although magnification is needed in order to identify it beneath the surface rust. The backing wool is without mothing, having no holes or other imperfections we sometimes see with wool.
On the back side, we see that the backing plate also shows rusting beneath the paper cover. This one had the three-prong pin layout, which is a standard for the Cholm Shield. Check out our other Cholm Shield with a very rare 2-pin layout.
