Here’s a nice one, an early factory ground Rohm SS dagger by Richard Herder (aka Rich. Abr. Herder Solingen).

The grip has a couple minor cracks on the front around the SS roundel, and a few small chips on the back near the upper guard, but otherwise only normal use wear that includes some minor scratches and dings. The grip eagle has retained approximately 95% of its original detail. The wreath appears to have sunk into the wood a bit, likely due to impact at some point. It’s not uncommon to see little impact issues such as this one. These daggers hung loosely from the wearer’s waist, so a sudden turn would send the grip smashing into a doorway, car door, or other object in it’s path. The SS roundel shows little wear, and is 98% in terms of enamel and clarity.

The cross guards show average use wear, and patina consistent with the metal fittings of the scabbard. The underside of the lower guard shows some impact dings (see photo), as well as the number “4” stamped into one side of the guard. The pommel nut shows some gnarling from removal, and appears to have been replaced at some point as the coloring is not consistent with the guards and other metal fittings.

The scabbard is the anodized type and is in exceptional condition considering many of these scabbards have severely oxidized or even rusted over time. Not this one. Sure it’s not perfect, but one of the better examples we’ve seen. The metal scabbard fittings show normal use wear, consisting of some scratches and minor dings. The scabbard tip ball is 100%, with no impact damage — something seldom seen with these.

The blade is in above average condition, not perfect but nicer than most. Only some minor oxidation spotting, and possibly some removable dirt mixed in. We typically do not clean our daggers — we prefer leaving that up to the discretion of our collectors should they choose to do so. The motto is a nice medium gray tone, strong etching, and is consistent with the maker’s mark on the reverse, “Rich. Abr. Herder Solingen”.
