SA Dagger by Gustav Wirth

SOLD!

A nice SA Dagger by a seldom seen maker, Gustav Wirth. The metal plating is 100%, with no notable flaws whatsoever; very clean and strong fittings! The grip is in great shape, with only very minor scratches and dings, hardly worth noting. The SA roundel has some minor discoloration typically found with these, but isolated to the top 25%, and only the very edge. The remainder of the SA dagger’s roundel is very crisp and one of the cleanest I’ve seen. The grip eagle has the very same color and shine as the cross guards, and retains about 95% of its detail…

The grip eagle has the very same color and shine as the cross guards, and retains about 95% of its detail.

The blade has a mixed condition. On the side with the motto the blade is in excellent condition, with no discoloration and only very minor scabbard wear. Good cross grain, with some minor hairline scratches are the only noteworthy flaws. The motto is nice and crisp, with a really attractive dark “shadow” around the edges of the letters that really make them pop. The reverse of the blade, however, appears to have been steel wooled a bit. There are fine scratches extending from the tip all the way down the blade and stopping shy of the makers mark. At first I thought perhaps this could be a Ground Rohm, but I suspect it was just the previous owner’s attempt to clean the blade since there are a couple of black stains on that side only. Otherwise the maker’s mark is nice and crisp, and clear of any staining.

The scabbard color is a nice chocolate brown color, with 98% coverage. Other than a couple minor scratches, the only notable flaw to the paint is a surface scuff about 3 inches in length that does not penetrate all the way through to the metal (still retains most of the brown color). The scabbard metal fittings are 100%, and the ball tip is without flaw. All scabbard screws are present and appear to be unmessed with.

The hanger is in beautiful condition. The leather is about 50/50; half shows some wear, while the other half appears almost new. The metal fittings are near perfect, and the clasp functions without flaw.

Other than the one side of the blade, this is a very nice SA dagger by a scarce maker. The side of the dagger blade with the motto is near perfect and should display very nicely!

This is a beauty! I’ve always loved the SA daggers. They’re good quality daggers that look close enough to SS daggers but with a price tag that’s easier to digest :)
