Here’s a real nice, early first pattern Kriegsmarine dagger with hard to come by black grip by the Alcoso firm. Typically we see these with white grips so it’s a real treat to have one in black.

This dagger overall is in exceptional condition. The pommel cap (nicknamed the “flame top”) has retained remarkable detail, displaying at least 95% of its factory detail, with no notable dings or flaws. The fit to the tang is nice and snug. The black grip with original braided gold wire is also without flaw. The guard displays the traditional Third Reich period anchor design on one side, beneath the beautifully braided original golden portepee, and the elongated diamond design on the reverse. The guard (as well as the pommel) shows some verdigris spotting, which we love to see since it can imply the piece has been untouched for many years. The scabbard retainer button is fully functional, and remnants of the original red scabbard buffer pad remain, although most of the pad has been lost to the years.

The double-engraved blade etching on this dagger is stunning! While there are some age spots on both sides, they absolutely do not detract from the magnificent sailing ship motif of the blade etching. The photos do not do this blade the justice it deserves. If you’ve ever purchased a dagger based on photos you know what I mean. The dagger in-hand is always so much nicer than the photos illustrate so keep this in mind. Photos tend to amplify the flaws. On the reverse of the blade near the guard is the Alcoso firm’s maker mark stamp, “A C S” wrapped around a set of scales.

The matching original scabbard keeps in line with the beauty and elegance of the rest of the dagger. We usually see these soft brass scabbard with severe dings, dents and deep tarnishing. Not this example! The scabbard shows only modest use wear and only a couple extremely minor impact dings that we only note for full disclosure; you have to look at the scabbard in the right light, and at the right angle to even see them. The thick rope design hanger bands show honest use wear (from rubbing against the wearer) but nothing more.

This is a hard to find dagger and won’t last at this price. If you’ve been in the market for a fist model Kriegsmarine navy dagger, this is the one to buy. You just don’t find these with the black grip.[/fusion_text]
