Another nice Hitler Youth Knife (also referred to as an HJ knife or dagger) by maker Arthur Schuttelhofer & Co. This is an early one, with the attractive double horse bust logo to the left of the words, “Arthur Schüttelhöfer & Co.” over “Wald-solingen”, which are situated lengthwise along the blade. Perpendicular to the maker’s mark are the words, “Ges. Geschutzt”.

The grip plates are free of any cracks or chips, and the emblem swivels as expected. The emblem is in near perfect condition, with 100% of the enamel in tact. The hilt plating is 95%, with no cracks and minimal wear at all.

The blade on this one is not pitted or eroded as the photos would imply. All discoloration is surface deep, meaning that if you run your fingers across the surface you do not feel any texture. The blade surface is perfectly smooth so someone skilled in blade reconditioning may be able to bring back the shine (if one so desired). The original leather buffer pad is not present on this one, but replacements can be found fairly easily. The blade edge is sharp to the touch, but doesn’t appear to have been sharpened post-war. The motto (Blut und Ehre!) is still faintly present in the right lighting. The maker’s mark is as described in the opening paragraph above.

The scabbard is interesting in that the black paint on the front side has completely worn off, yet the paint on the back side is 95%. Either this was the start of someone’s repaint project, or the original wearer had something constantly rubbing against the entire front of the scabbard. The scabbard strap and snap strap are both present, complete and functional. The leather is still supple, but like many of these HJ knife straps, this one does have its share of wear and weathering. There are several cracks, but none compromise the integrity of the leather. The leather itself is very thick and strong.
