This is a type 2, 1936 Chained SS Dagger straight out of the veteran’s footlocker (literally). This SS Dagger, along with a Hitler Youth BDM pennant, a Hitler Youth armband, and flag.

The grip is solid, without any cracks and only a couple minor dings. The eagle is beautiful, retaining 100% of it’s original detail and has a perfect patina. SS roundel is also 100%. The upper guard is suspect — having a lighter tone than the lower and a rough fit to the grip. There is also no internal mark on the upper guard. The lower guard, however, is solid nickel, has a nice fit, and is internally marked, “H”. Whether the upper guard is a wartime replacement or post-war replacement is anyone’s guess.

The scabbard is a real beauty! The anodized finish is 100% with only modest hairline scratches and no chips. The fittings have a nice age patina, some modest wear, but no dents to note — not even to the tip ball. The center band shows the standard type 2 dark pebbled burnishing, as do the chain links. There are six links in all; three with the SS deaths head, and three with SS runes. As shown, the single connector link that attached the set of four links to the center band is missing. On the reverse of one link is the SS proof stamp (two intertwined sig runes). The Woton knot shows no DRGM mark (as is expected with a type 2 SS chained dagger), and the two connector rings are tapered as they enter the knot. The knot shows heavy use wear to the metal around the top and back of the hook. All scabbard screws are secure and show no evidence of removal.

The blade is in exceptional condition when compared with other examples I’ve seen. Aside from the normal runner marks along the length of the blade, there is a pair of moisture stains on each side, each a little more than the size of a dime. These stains appear to barely break the surface (there is no texture to them whatsoever), and could possibly be removed by a skilled professional. The motto has a crisp cut, with a light gray tone.

If you’re looking for an honest, untouched veteran acquired Chained SS Dagger, that still has the verdigris from years of storage, you don’t want to pass this up!

Nice chained SS! I’ve been wanting to add one of these to my collection for year, just don’t have the money lying around to pull the trigger :) Maybe one day. I particularly like the dark coloring of the links in the type 2 ss daggers. I think the color gives it a more elegant look. Anyway, nice piece of history!
